Eastern Orthodox Christianity is a Christian denomination that holds to the theological and liturgical traditions of the early church as defined by the seven Ecumenical Councils. It has operated continuously from the first century CE, centered historically in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire and subsequently in Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and worldwide diaspora communities. It is principally associated with the Nicene Creed, episcopal church governance under the Patriarchate of Constantinople and other autocephalous patriarchates, and liturgical practice in the Byzantine Rite.
