Epicureanism is a school of ancient Greek philosophy founded by Epicurus of Samos, centered on the pursuit of ataraxia (tranquility) and aponia (freedom from pain) as the highest goods. It was established in Athens around 307 BCE, where Epicurus founded a community called the Garden, and spread throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds, persisting in various forms to the present day.
