Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military officer who became First Consul of France in 1799 and Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1814, with a brief return to power in 1815. He operated across France and much of continental Europe during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period. He is principally associated with the Napoleonic Code, a series of European military campaigns, and extensive reorganization of French civil and legal institutions.
