West Germany, formally the Federal Republic of Germany, was a parliamentary democratic republic established under the Basic Law of 1949, governed through a bicameral legislature, a federal chancellor as head of government, and a federal president as head of state. It existed from 1949 to 1990 in the western occupation zones of post-World War II Germany, with Bonn as its capital, until formal reunification with East Germany on 3 October 1990.
