The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a federal parliamentary republic in which Islam is designated the state religion and a foundational principle of the constitutional order. It has existed in South Asia since 1956, when the first constitution established the Islamic republic framework, following the country's creation as an independent state in 1947. Its constitutional structure includes a bicameral legislature, a president, a prime minister, provincial governments, and provisions requiring that laws conform to the injunctions of Islam as interpreted by the Council of Islamic Ideology.
