Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer and political figure who led campaigns against colonial rule. He operated primarily in South Africa from 1893 to 1914 and then in British India from 1915 until his death in 1948. He is principally associated with the use of nonviolent civil disobedience as a political method and with the Indian independence movement.
