Maoist China refers to the People's Republic of China under the leadership of Mao Zedong as Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party. It existed from the founding of the People's Republic in October 1949 until Mao's death in September 1976, governing mainland China from Beijing. It is principally associated with a series of large-scale political and economic campaigns, including the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, carried out under Maoist ideology.
