Nelson Mandela was a South African political figure who served as the first Black president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 under the African National Congress. He had previously been imprisoned on Robben Island and other facilities from 1964 to 1990 following conviction on sabotage charges, and before that had served in various leadership roles within the ANC.
