Ujamaa is a political and economic ideology developed in Tanzania in the 1960s that combined principles of African communal living with socialist organization of production and distribution. It was formally articulated and implemented by Julius Nyerere as state policy in Tanzania from 1967, following the Arusha Declaration, through the 1980s.
