Nyerere (Tanzania presidency), as realized, 1961-1985
20th Century · realized scope
The administration of Julius Nyerere refers to the period of government in Tanzania under his leadership, first as Prime Minister and then as President. It operated from Tanzanian independence in 1961 until Nyerere's retirement from the presidency in 1985, centered in Dar es Salaam and later Dodoma. It is principally associated with the Ujamaa policy of African socialism, the Arusha Declaration of 1967, and the consolidation of Tanzania as a single-party state under Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
