Zapatista Movement (EZLN), as realized, 1994-present
20th Century · realized scope
The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is an armed political organization based in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, composed largely of indigenous Maya communities and governed through a structure of autonomous councils. It emerged publicly on January 1, 1994, coinciding with the date the North American Free Trade Agreement came into force, and has operated in the Chiapas highlands and jungle regions since that date. The movement is principally associated with the establishment of autonomous self-governing territories in Chiapas known as caracoles, operated outside formal Mexican state structures.
