Sandinista Nicaragua, as realized, 1979-1990
20th Century · realized scope
Sandinista Nicaragua refers to the government of Nicaragua under the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) following the 1979 revolution that ended the Somoza dynasty. It operated from July 1979 to April 1990, centered in Managua, Nicaragua, with a governing junta that transitioned to an elected presidency under Daniel Ortega from 1985. The administration is principally associated with land reform programs, literacy campaigns, a prolonged armed conflict with Contra forces, and U.S. economic and military pressure during the Cold War period.
