The Zulu Kingdom was a monarchical state in southeastern Africa, founded and ruled by a succession of kings beginning with Shaka in the early nineteenth century. It existed from approximately 1816 until its formal dissolution following the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the subsequent partition of Zululand, with the last recognized king's authority ending by 1897.
